Aviation Still Life: Air Force Museum of New Zealand

I reached out to my friend Brett Marshall. He is the Director at the Airforce Museum of New Zealand.
"Can I please come and take some photos at the Air Force Museum?
This is my final assignment for my Diploma in Photography. I have been studying for two years distance learning through the Southern Institute of Technology, New Zealand."

This project was started by the thought of using aircraft components as still life. I wanted to do some thing like a traditional flower arrangement on a table tabletop. Arranging  parts, components and tools on a workbench proved somewhat difficult. Hangars are busy and tradesman don't want their tools and parts misplaced. These items proved easier and more pleasing to my eye by isolating against a simple grey or black or white background.

I had originally planned dramatic side lighting however that would have lost some of the dramatic detail. All these parts, engines and aircraft were designed pre computer. Hand built and an eye for detail. All built to a high standard and close tolerances. Every thing evolved to make lighter, less drag and more power. By lighting with two big soft boxes with a 100mb camera all the colour and detail has been captured. My favourite photo would be the Gypsy 6 engine in its original packing frame.

I was a Royal New Zealand Air Force Aircraft Technician specialising in Engines and Airframes (1987-1995). I worked on the Bell Iroquois and HS Andover. My last year was in the Skin Bay repairing structural components. I am a Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer. I now fly as an Airline Pilot.

My Granddad was a Flight Instructor throughout World War II based in New Zealand. Both my Children are currently serving in the RNZAF. 'Light Blue' runs in our family.

I feel a little older knowing I have worked on equipment now in a museum!

A special thanks goes out to all the staff at the Air Force Museum of New Zealand who helped me achieve these photos. Especially Raz and Barf. My patient photo assistant and wife Kelly. A big thank you to Brett Marshall for welcoming an old friend from the 'Mog' and 42 Squadron days.

I had been selling my images since I was 15. By the time I was 19 I thought I was pretty good. I got hired on a part time basis to carry stuff for a photographer. So in a sense all I was, was very cheap labor to carry stuff, my ability with a camera was incidental.
